Many factors may cause knowledge gaps related to laboratory utilization including: 
 
  • Explosive growth in the number of laboratory analytes,
  • Molecular tests show greatest percentage of growth, with estimated growth of 25% annually,
  • Lack of guidance from many laboratories to assist in appropriate test choice,
  • Lack of adequate interpretation of test results,
  • Same test with multiple synonyms, and
  • Similar names for very different tests.


However, you can narrow the gap by using various tools.  There are lab test utilization tools that a reference laboratory can and should provide to assist you in your medical practice to appropriately order lab tests for your patients.  Together you can provide quality patient care that is cost-efficient.
