Identifying lab test utilization tools for use is a solid first step towards optimized test utilization in your laboratory.  To continue down the road of success there are additional issues for you to consider.  Additional utilization strategies will help you to avoid the pitfalls of testing overuse, underuse and/or misuse. 
 
Laboratory Utilization Management should be driven by the components below.    
  • Engagement of all members of practice in standardizing use of routine tests and test panels
  • Deletion of obsolete tests from catalog
  • Alerts for underutilized tests
  • Alerts for over utilized tests
  • Interpretation of test results
